Military Cup Challenge - 2001 August 02, 2001 | Las Vegas, NV
Air Force Wins First Military Cup The Air Force team of Master Sergeant (retired) Mark Walls, Chief Master Sergeant Wes White, and Technical Sergeant Special Pete Rutkowski won bragging rights as the best darters in the military by defeating the Marine Corps in the finals of the first Military Cup Challenge. The Championship Air Force team is stationed at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia and will host the "Cup" until next year's event.
The event, sponsored by Budweiser, took place at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and was held in conjunction with the $70,000 American Darters Association's (ADA) National Championship. Some of the best darts players in the Armed Forces participated. Service men or women with active, reserve/guard or retired military status were eligible to form teams from their branch of the service.
The runner-up Marine Corps team consisted of Mark Koziorowski (team captain), Roy Barnett, and Hector Saenz who are stationed at Camp Pendleton, California.
The match consisted of triples, doubles, and singles games with the first team reaching 9 points declared the winner. The Air Force defeated the Marine Corps 9-2 in the finals. All Military Cup participants were eligible for the remaining events at the ADA National Championship.
ADA President, Glenn Remick organized the event and was impressed. "The caliber of play by these military darters equaled our Championship members. There were great darts thrown during the "Cup" and the competition and enthusiasm was contagious. Every team enrolled wanted to take the Cup back to their unit! With thousands of service men and women playing darts worldwide, I'm pleased to bring an event to the military that represents them".
Plans are already underway for the second Military Cup Challenge. The ADA has also developed the Military American Dart League and this program begins this fall.
