Military Cup Challenge - 2002 August 08, 2002 | Las Vegas, NV
Military Cup Challenge II By Glenn Remick
The number of darts players in the US military is staggering! Within the past year the ADA has gained cooperation from each branch of the service to develop the dart leagues in the military. Currently league play is taking place in the Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy. In addition to league play the ADA created the Military Cup Challenge. This purpose of this event is to bring military darters together in a competition to determine which branch of the service has the best darters.
In August of 2001, the ADA hosted the first Military Cup Challenge. Held at last year's National Championship soft tip teams representing the Air Force and Marine Corps participated. The Langley Air Force team defeated the Marine Corps Camp Pendleton team 9-2 in the finals to secure the first Military Cup.

The National Championship again played host to the second Military Cup Challenge. I'm pleased to report additional military teams enrolled to include a steel tip Military Cup division. On the soft tip side the same Langley Air Force team returned with the Cup determined to take it back to Langley for another year! Returning with a slightly different line up was the Marine Corps Camp Pendleton team looking for revenge and to cop the Cup! On the traditional English steel tip side, four teams from the Air Force enrolled. Three teams came from Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas and the remaining team came from Ohio's Youngstown Air Force Base.
Sponsored by Budweiser, Coca-Cola, Valley NSM & Dart World, the event was held on Thursday, August 8th and coincided with the civilian Team Championship competition. As predicted the Langley AFB and Camp Pendleton teams squared off in the finals to lay claim to the soft tip Military Cup. After two hours of competition the "Air Force One" Langley AFB team once again emerged as the Champions defeating the "Wrecking Crew" Camp Pendleton Marines by the same 9-2 score as last year! Team members include, Captain Mark Walls USAF Retired, Chief Master Sgt. Wes White and Technical Sgt. Pete Rutkowski. The Marine Corps Division Championship team consisted of Team Captain Master Gunnery Sgt. Mark Koziorowski, Captain James O'Driscoll & Gunnery Sgt. Steve Scott.

On the English steel tip side it turned out to be an all Sheppard AFB finals with the "Sheppard Flyers" defeating the 382nd team by a score of 9-1. Team members included Team Captain Technical Sgt. Steve Mitchell, Technical Sgt. Fred Leighty & Master Sgt. Bill Shackelford. Over the past three years Sheppard AFB have hosted their own dart league and recently transferred over to the USAF Clubs Dart League. League administrator SMSGT Holly Dye reports, "It's a great league program. The ADA provided everything required start the program. I simply forward the completed score sheets to the ADA and they do the rest! We now look forward to the fall season and returning next year to the 3rd Military Cup Challenge."
With both Military Cups residing at Langley & Sheppard AF Bases, the Air Force can lay claim to having the best darters in the military! I am also pleased to report that all participants of the second Military Cup Challenge participated in the USAF Clubs and Marine Corps Community Services Dart League!
