It’s time again for our annual England vs ADA Telephone Darts Challenge. In review this is an event I started way back in 1981 when I was President of the Western MA Darting Association. As an indoor event during the Northampton, Massachusetts Winter Festival we challenged “sister city” Northampton, England to a darts match via telephone.
So the first international telephone darts match was born! The following year and for 15 years thereafter (ending in 1997) the “Northampton vs Northampton International Telephone Challenge” was an annual event that darts players & residents looked forward to. To the best of my knowledge it remains the longest running international darts match in the world.
Last year Daytona hosted the match & the ADA lost by a score of 7-4. This year St. Louis will host the event held at the Dubliner on Sunday, April, 15th. The ten person team will play a mixture of 601 Triples, 501 Doubles & 501 Singles. A qualifying round held Saturday, March 31st at the Dubliner will determine the team. This event is open to all darters. Click here for additional qualifying information.
Large speakers will be installed so participants and spectators could actually hear every dart “thumping” into the dartboard! Local celebrities will open the competition by throwing a 12 dart “high score” match against each other. The winner determines “home field” advantage. Once underway me and my counterpart, Horace Handley will serve as emcee announcing scores from both side.
In an arrangement with Eagle Teleconferencing ADA members and non-members alike can witness this international match. The ADA will list a telephone conference number with a three-digit pin number. Simply call this number and when prompted enter the pin number. You will then hear the match live as it is being played!
On the other side of the pond the match will still take place in Northampton, England. The location is the Princess Alexandra Pub. Starting time is 1:00 PM CST. Additional information will be posted on the ADA web site as it becomes available. Stay tuned!
