It’s a good thing that the bars are open 24 hours in New Orleans because if you have two last place teams in league compete against each other it could take a while! The doubles league was new to the Summer Division calendar in ADA Reps Dawn and Charles Dufrene area and they wanted to do something special at the end for the two in-house leagues. After the session was over and the point checks and division trophies were handed out an additional event was added; Best of the Best. The two first place teams from each bar competed against each other for a trophy and bragging rights.
When the pictures of the session were sent to the ADA home office we were very amused to hear about the other tournament – the Best of the Worse. It’s not often that members ask for a tournament / trophy to determine who the sessions’ worse team was but that’s exactly what happened to Dawn and Charles.
Throughout this summer doubles league there were two teams that seemed to be fighting for the last place position. It’s not like they were trying to be bad, they just had trouble finding the right marks to win the games. ADA members Elizabeth Hickman and Jimmy Gooch competed against Larry Bordlee and Vanessa Hunter for the Best of the Worse bragging rights and trophy.
“We now know why they are the last place teams. It took them over 5 hours to get a final score for this tournament” said Dawn. She goes on to report that when the two first place teams ended their tournament of 18 games the two worse teams were only on their second game. The Best of the Worse tournament lasted until 1 o’clock AM. Here at the ADA office we applaud these members for never giving up and continuing to play until they found a true winner (even if it was of the losers). At any time they could have corked to end this tournament but they played it out. Final score? 11-1! Congratulations (?) to Elizabeth Hickman and Jimmy Gooch for being New Orleans Best of the Worst doubles league team!
Based on the pictures it shows that everyone had a great time and found enjoyment in such a unique event. There was no official ruling but in the end, Larry Bordlee gave himself the title of “Worse of the Worse” and admitted he wanted his picture taken with Elizabeth, Jimmy and the trophy since he will never win one for himself.
