The Valentine’s Sweetheart Steel Tip Dart Tournament was held on Feb. 7th 2004. The event was hosted by Shear Sports in Bakersfield, CA and managed by American Darters Association Representative Doug Vontz from the Central California American Dart League. Couples throughout the Bakersfield area attended this double elimination mixed doubles event. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, all the participating ladies received a special gift courtesy of Shear Sports.
History was also made at Shear Sports, as the first Vortex electronic steel tip dart boards in the state of California were introduced. This revolutionary technology brings the tradition of steel tip darts played on bristle boards together with the ease of coin-operated automatically scored dart machines. The darters could simply focus on their game and let the dart machine keep score for them. It was a big hit with most all that attended. In fact, many of the darters asked to wait to play until a Vortex board was available to them! Watch for the first leagues to play on Vortex machines in CA in the coming weeks.
Great darts were tossed throughout the afternoon and into the evening as the competition advanced through the brackets. As the event wound down, it found 2 teams that worked their way through the entire bracket to meet each other. The first team of Jenn Berg and Alex “Big Dog” Rodriguez went undefeated through the main bracket to make the championship match. Their opponent, Patty Acord and Dan “Murfdog” Murphy lost their first match in the main bracket, but didn’t lose again as they clawed their way through the elimination bracket to the finals.
With the momentum behind them Patty & Dan handed Jenn & Alex their first loss of the day by the taking the opening game. The teams split the next 2 games, setting the stage for a winner-take-all final cricket game. The lead went back on forth as both teams scored at will. Tensions increased as they approached the end of the set with both teams trying to finish the other off. Finally Alex “Big Dog” ended the day with a triple 17 and 2 bulls-eyes to win the tournament with a mighty “Woof! Woof! Woof!”.
Thanks again to all the participants that made it a great day of fun, darts and competition. Special thanks to J.J. Wyly and Jeff Leonard of Shear Sports for the warm welcome and his support of darts.
