Home Runs Meet Bull’s-Eyes in The River City Rascals’ Home Stadium

Photo: T. R. Hughes BallparkO’FALLON, MISSOURI – The great American pastime, baseball, joins forces with that other great American pastime, darts, at the T.R. Hughes Ballpark here on May 23. That’s when the American Darters Association and Michelob AmberBock will co-sponsor a unique dart tournament, taking place in the stadium as the River City Rascals minor league baseball team plays against the Gateway Grizzlies. The first pitch is thrown at 6:05 PM, and the first dart will be thrown at the same time!

The ballgame takes place on the diamond, of course.  But the dart tournament will be staged on two machines located on the observation deck, overlooking the right outfield…conveniently located adjacent to the beer concession stand!

Darts prizes totaling $1,000.00 will be awarded to the top eight winners.  A total of 75 dart players (steel tip and soft tip) will compete in March and April in weekly local American Dart League competitions in St. Charles County, MO, for a slot in this first-ever River City Rascals tournament.  All tournament members will be at least 21 years old. One top ADL league divisional winner will be named “Member of the Week” each week, and will receive free entry to the May 23 ballgame.

These ADA competitors will also enjoy premium seating for the ballgame in two special, reserved suites overlooking right field. Logo: River City RascalsIn addition, entrants will receive complementary beverages for the evening.

Simultaneously with the River City Rascals ballgame and the ADA tournament, a second darts contest will be open to every adult baseball fan (21 years old and older) in the stadium. Fans will get three chances to throw a bulls-eye; winners will receive an AmberBock merchandise prize. Some 4,500 loyal supporters typically attend River City Rascals games.

“We are delighted to work with River City Rascals and AmberBock to cross-promote two great sports,” said ADA President Glenn Remick.  “The national pastime of baseball is a natural candidate to link with darts.  This is the first time we’ve run a dart tournament at a professional baseball game, and to our knowledge it’s the first time it’s been done anywhere in America.  It’s a wonderful opportunity to introduce darts to thousands of people in the community – men and women alike make great players and enjoy the sport.  Baseball offers the perfect setting because it, too, is an organized sport that generates universal appeal by stressing skill, fun, good sportsmanship, and long-term statistics!”

The ADA-River City Rascals event will be staged on two different types of electronic dart machines.  Sportsmen and women who prefer English steel-tip darts can throw at the Vortex machine, a standard bristle dartboard equipped with a low-frequency radio wave generator that detects each metal dart thrown  translating its location (hit pattern) into points scored. Fans of soft-tip darts can throw their darts at a Valley “Cougar 8” machine which also reads and displays scores electronically. Both types of machines offer unsurpassed accuracy and speedy, user-friendly gameplay. According to ADA President Glenn Remick, “The beauty of electronic darts is that keeping score is the hardest part, but the machine does it for you!”

Local radio broadcasts of River City Rascals ballgames always feature a celebrity interview during the seventh inning stretch. During the May 23 game, ADA’s Remick will be the interviewee, explaining the role of darts in the community and at the ballgame.

Operating in 26 states and boasting 10,000 members nationwide, the American Dart League is the only dart organization in the United States that offers both steel-tip and soft-tip dart competition – utilizing the same league format, same rules, and same games in both divisions!  Participation in the ADL is exclusively available to members of the American Darters Association. The opportunity to enjoy ADL weekly league play, with all its fun, flexibility, and innovation, is the biggest benefit of ADA membership!

The ADA – River City Rascals May 23 tournament will introduce thousands of baseball fans to this fun, exciting sport for the first time.  And, baseball fans and ADA members alike will enjoy the chance to sample the rich and smooth taste of AmberBock.
