After wrapping up with the Southwest Regional in Phoenix the ADA staff headed back to the office and I hit the road for Albuquerque, NM the first stop of five AmberBock Draw Doubles Challenges in four states. On the way I stopped in Gallup, NM for the evening. With cooperation from Premier Distributing, the local Anheuser-Busch wholesaler, I visited four locations with darts. Lots of darters in Gallup but no leagues! I look forward to working with these taverns to start a small soft tip Express League division later this fall.
The following day I hit I-40 east for the short 140 mile trip to Albuquerque. The Premier Distributing branch set up Sneakerz for the AmberBock Draw Doubles Challenge. Sneakerz is a huge sports bar with plenty of bar sports inside and volleyball courts outside. They have dedicated a back room with six dartboards, a great location for darts! Make no mistake about it, Albuquerque is a steel tip town – no soft tip here - and home of some the best darters in the southwest.
Remember the days when people would go out to play darts just for fun? For the first time in a long, long time I conducted a draw doubles with NO entry fee! However there were plenty of prizes as AmberBock provided bristle dartboards, sport shirts, hats, mugs and darts. In fact everyone walked out a winner! The format was best of three double elimination (501/cricket/choice) with Tavake Misailegalu and Anthony Miera capturing first place and the Michelob AmberBock bristle dartboards. Placing second was Pam Patton and Brian Spieker.
I took time to meet with local promoters Sal Garcia, Scott Hensey and Matt Grieco. We discussed expanding the ADA to this great city and with support from Premier Distributing we look forward to expanding the American Dart League here this fall.
Next AmberBock Draw Doubles Challenge stop….Amarillo, TX. Stay tuned!
