Mid-America Regional Championship - Event Wrap Up

When It Rains - It Pours and Add Ice, Too!
Schedule an event in January in Mid America and you take the risk of having a bad weather weekend. The ADA "rolled the dice" and came up with snake eyes as Mother Nature dealt a combination of near record cold, freezing rain and snow! Not a good combination for the first ADA Regional Championship!

However the inclement weather conditions couldn't keep "die hard" ADA members from attending the Mid America Regional as they came from Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. This Championship moved from St. Louis (2004) to the beautiful Kings Island Resort located just north of Cincinnati in Warren County. A special thanks to the Warren County Convention & Visitor's Convention Bureau for their assistance in making this Regional possible.  The ADA Championship Series is the world's only national darts competition to host both soft and steel-tip competition.  Soft-tip play was held on Valley Cougar 8 machines with steel tip action taking place on custom AmberBock bristle dartboards.

The greater Cincinnati area has a long history of darts. There are four steel tip dart clubs and three soft tip leagues in the city alone!  Sponsored by Michelob AmberBock the Mid America Regional started on Thursday night with a steel tip Draw Doubles.  Bud Friedrich and Dayton Strawbridge from PA captured first place.

Cricket singles followed Friday at noon. This unique best of three, best of three sets format leaves no excuse for losing as a minimum of four games and a maximum of nine games are played!  After a full afternoon of competition Jason Jarvis from Dayton, OH took first place honors on the soft tip side tossing an impressive 4.91 marks per round. Charley Sawyer from PA captured first place on the steel tip side.  A soft tip Draw Doubles wrapped up the day with Pat Bonner and Steve Rosser from PA taking first place.

Team Triples was the first event on Saturday.  This format is actually the American Dart League Express League format and was introduced for the first time at an ADA Regional. Members played a combination of cricket triples, cricket doubles and 501 singles with the first team to reach six points (1 point per game) advancing to the next round. Soft tippers Phil Scalero, Troy Engleman and Bob Bockrath from the greater Dayton area were the victors. On the steel tip side, another Dayton area team took first place honors, Adam Kaempf, Jason Jarvis and Jason Van Zant. Men's, Women's and the third Draw Doubles followed.  Jason Van Zant & Jason Jarvis first in soft tip, Adam Kaempf & Phil Scalero in steel and Missy Tait-Sprague & Kristi Benzinger, soft tip (all from OH) finished topped the field in each event. Cincinnati members Jamie Tessoff & Brandon Hicks won the soft tip draw with Don Prives from MO and Steve Rosser from PA capturing the steel tip draw.

Mixed Triples, Mixed Doubles, Men's & Women's Singles concluded the Championship on Sunday.  First place winners:

Mixed Trips: Tiffany Daniels, OH Celeste Gidich, OH & Leo Van Duyn, OH (soft tip) Charley Sawyer, PA Jill Petrosky, OH & Bud Friedrich, PA (steel tip)

Mixed Doubles: Dayton Strawbridge, PA & Kristi Benzinger, OH (steel tip)

Men's Singles Steel: Dayton Strawbridge, PA

Women's Singles Soft tip: Kristi Benzinger, OH

Men's Singles Soft-tip: Jamie Tessoff, OH

Saturday's Cricket Marks Per Round (Top 5)

Jason Van Zant   5.13
Jason Jarvis       4.91
Steve Thomas     4.75
Phil Scalero       4.00
Bob Bockrath     3.84

In spite of the bad weather shifting the Mid America Regional to the Kings Island Resort was a positive move. The greater Cincinnati region is a great area for darts and the ADA looks forward to bringing the Mid America Regional there in 2006!
