Border Challenge in North America Settled

American Flag vs. Canadian Flag

North America celebrated and praised our past, present and future soldiers on Veteran’s Day not only on the 11th but this past weekend as well.  For those keeping track at home each year on Veteran’s Day Weekend the ADA normally challenges our counter part Jeff Billingham in England.  But due to COVID and England just getting back on their feet, they had little to no time to get their team together in time.  But don’t worry, Jeff confirmed they will be back in 2022! Yes!

So with the ADA Area Wide Event already scheduled for Rock Falls Tavern, Richmond Virginia, we needed a challenger……thankfully, ADA Rep Holly Dye had the answer! In her lovely east-coast accent, she proclaimed: “Canada”!

Before we knew it she was on the phone with ADA Member and future Canada Captain Andrew Penney.  Immediately he was in! Now all he had to do was build a team and get them together for the event date of Saturday, November 13th.

While both teams were forming, getting situated and practicing for the event, there was another bonus to watching this match for some members out there. For the first time, The D-Draft got involved in this match, advertising that YOU the fan could draft and build an official ‘Fantasy Darts Team’, combining members of both teams!
Your fantasy team consisted of 7 members spanning over both country’s and a multiple of stats to award points. Just like in real fantasy sports! D-Draft’s Andrew Van Koeverden & Karl Remick not only keep running stats for the event but also commentated with the help of the Live Stream through Hambone Darts.  “Nick did an amazing job connecting the two country’s together! We definitely couldn’t have done it without him.  D-Draft wise it was amazing recording the stats from this side of the table and watching the teams fluctuate their place positions.”, says AVK.  Check out the D-Draft Winning team below.

The match started at high noon on that Saturday through our partner’s online scoring program DartConnect and each Captain did their very best to toggle their individual teams and where to place their members.  “This was my second time overseeing Team ADA in one of these country challenges, and I have to say spreading out our fantastic members on this roster sheet was like a game of chess! I am sure I changed the lineup 3 or 4 times before game time.  But it was fun nonetheless! I just want to be on the team next year competing!; adds USA Captain Holly Dye.

Canada went up the first two sets on USA and it wasn’t until game 3 of Dan Hardin’s Singles match putting USA in the W Set column. Each match played was a best of 3 awarding points for each game won, playing a total of 17 games for the day.  “I was extremely surprised of how big this match actually was.  We had a packed back room of not only the team themselves, but fans and dart enthusiasts watching this online match first thing when we opened!” stated RFT Manager Jenna Westbrook.
The next 4 games Canada was squeaking by just barely out throwing USA with a handful of singles games and one mixed triples. Each game USA would get so close but it wasn’t until game 8 when Ricky Allred (USA) vs. Andrew Penney (CAN) played their singles match, and Ricky took 2 games making the score an 11 to 11 tie! The Rock Falls Tavern crowd went crazy almost blowing the roof off the place!

Sean Pitt (USA) followed suit in the next game match against John Parrot (CAN) taking 2 out of the 3 games giving USA their first lead of the day 13 – 12.  The crowd still very much into the match and more spectators pouring in.
Stephin Foreman (USA) was holding his own hitting some much needed Ton+ but alas his opponent JM Legault ended up hitting his outs first and took the match 2 – 1.  And Team Canada did not slow up from there.

From game 11 to the finish of game 16, Canada went on a terror taking all matches 2 – 0 with the exception of Peg McFarland’s (USA) Singles match vs. Rhonda Maidment (CAN) taking one win, 2 – 1.
The match ended in a brutal Canada Win 26 – 15.  But both teams had a great time!
“I’ve been playing darts for years and love the sport, but its always great to get involved in a different challenge on the board.  I am very glad that USA asked us to compete in this and will definitely do this again! See you next year team USA ADA!” adds Canada Captain Andrew Penney!
